Album
Scum
Scum is the debut album from Napalm Death, the English band who helped define grindcore. It came out on 1 July 1987 on Earache Records. The record is split down the middle: each side was recorded by a different line-up, in sessions about a year apart, with drummer Mick Harris the only player to appear on both.
It found an audience quickly, selling over 10,000 copies in its first year and reaching number four on the UK Indie chart. Its reputation has only grown since. Kerrang! readers voted it the 50th best British album of all time in 2005, Terrorizer placed it fifth among essential European grindcore albums in 2009, and it appears in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. If you want to hear where grindcore took shape, and where Napalm Death's long run of albums begins, this is the place to start.
