Heartwork

Heartwork is the fourth studio album by Carcass, the English extreme metal band, and it came out in October 1993. It was recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool over five weeks that summer, and it arrived on Earache Records in the UK. In the US it appeared in January 1994 through Columbia, which made it the band's only major label release. It has been called their breakthrough and a landmark of melodic death metal, and guitarist Bill Steer names it as his own favourite Carcass record.

For the story so far, it follows the gruesome grindcore of Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of Sickness and the sharper Necroticism. It was also the last album to feature guitarist Michael Amott, who left afterwards to form Spiritual Beggars. The sleeve is worth a look too: it shows a sculpture designed by H. R. Giger, updating one he made in the late 1960s, and the title track's video brings it to life with a person welded into it.
