Slaughter of the Soul is the fourth studio album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, released on 14 November 1995 through Earache Records. It followed The Red in the Sky Is Ours, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness and Terminal Spirit Disease, and it turned out to be the last record the band made before they split in 1996.

That ending gives the album a particular place in the story. At the Gates stayed apart for eleven years, returning in 2007, and the follow-up albums only arrived from 2014 onwards. Slaughter of the Soul is regarded as a landmark of melodic death metal, especially in the Gothenburg scene, and it is widely seen as a key influence on the American metalcore bands who found a wide audience in the early 2000s. If you want to hear where that sound took shape, this is the place to start.
