At the Gates

At the Gates are a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden, formed in 1990. Alongside Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, they helped shape the Gothenburg sound of the mid-1990s. Their first run produced four albums, starting with The Red in the Sky Is Ours in 1992 and followed by With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness and Terminal Spirit Disease, before they split in 1996.

Slaughter of the Soul, released in 1995, is the record most people reach for first, and it is regarded as a landmark of the decade's Swedish death metal scene. The band reunited in 2007 for what began as a one-off tour in 2008, then kept going. Four more albums followed: At War with Reality, To Drink from the Night Itself, The Nightmare of Being and, in 2026, The Ghost of a Future Dead.
