Morbid Angel are a death metal band from Tampa, Florida, formed in 1983 by guitarist and main composer Trey Azagthoth, vocalist and bassist Dallas Ward and drummer Mike Browning. Azagthoth is the only original member still in the band. They were among the first to combine guttural vocals, fast blast beats, frequent tempo changes and a dark, heavy atmosphere, and their intricate arrangements lean heavily on Azagthoth's guitar work and Pete Sandoval's drumming.

Their first three albums, Altars of Madness (1989), Blessed Are the Sick (1991) and Covenant (1993), are regarded as genre classics, with Domination (1995) also among their best-known records. Signing to Giant Records in 1992 brought MTV exposure and a spot on Beavis and Butt-Head for "God of Emptiness". Early lyrics dwelt on Satanism and the occult; from Formulas Fatal to the Flesh (1998) they turned towards Sumerian gods.
