Gateways to Annihilation

Popularity45.5

Gateways to Annihilation is the sixth studio album by American death metal band Morbid Angel, released on 17 October 2000 by Earache Records. It follows Formulas Fatal to the Flesh, but rather than pushing the speed any further, the band slow things down into a heavier, droning style that recalls Blessed Are the Sick. The intro, "Kawazu", takes its name from an old Japanese word for "frog", which accounts for the croaking you hear on it.

It's a record of firsts and lasts for the line-up. Steve Tucker contributes lyrics and music for the first time, while guitarist and keyboardist Erik Rutan appears for the second and final time. Dan Seagrave, who painted the sleeve for Altars of Madness, returns to provide the cover art, his first for the band since that debut. For anyone who knows Morbid Angel mainly for their fastest work, this is the place to hear them at a more deliberate, weighty pace.
