Once Upon the Cross
Once Upon the Cross is the third studio album by the American death metal band Deicide, released on 18 April 1995 through Roadrunner Records. It followed their self-titled debut of 1990 and Legion in 1992, and it came ahead of Serpents of the Light in 1997, so it sits at the centre of the band's early run of records.
The title track opens with a sample taken from the film The Last Temptation of Christ, and "Trick or Betrayed" does the same, which sets the confrontational tone the band's name promises. For anyone tracing how Deicide's brand of death metal developed through the first half of the 1990s, this is the chapter to hear between Legion and the albums that came after.
