Hellalive is Machine Head's first live album, released in March 2003 on Roadrunner Records. It arrived as the band's way of fulfilling their commitment to the label, and Through the Ashes of Empires followed shortly afterwards. The title plays on "hell alive" and "hella live", though Robb Flynn later called it idiotic and nonsensical. Adam Duce had first suggested "Let's Roll", a phrase tied to United Airlines Flight 93.

The record sits at a point of change in the band's story. Two tracks, "None But My Own" and "The Burning Red", come from 2002's Full Force Festival, where Phil Demmel, formerly of Vio-lence, played guitar in place of Ahrue Luster, who had left by then. Demmel is credited in the liner notes and later joined as permanent lead guitarist. For anyone tracing how Machine Head became the band they are now, it offers a snapshot of that transition.
