The Angel and the Dark River
The Angel and the Dark River is the third studio album by English doom metal band My Dying Bride, released on 15 May 1995 through Fierce Recordings. It follows As the Flower Withers and Turn Loose the Swans, and sits just before Like Gods of the Sun in the band's run of records. Its sound is rooted in doom and gothic metal.
Aaron Stainthorpe's lyrics carry on in the spirit of Turn Loose the Swans, dwelling on religious symbolism and troubled relationships. He has said in many interviews that "Two Winters Only" is his favourite My Dying Bride song, which makes it a good place to start. The album was reissued in 1996 with a bonus track, "The Sexuality of Bereavement", and a second disc, Live at the Dynamo, recorded at the Dynamo Festival in 1995. Five of its six tracks also feature on the band's video release For Darkest Eyes.
