Individual Thought Patterns
Individual Thought Patterns is the fifth studio album by Death, the American death metal band, and it came out on 22 June 1993. It follows Human and pushes that record's technical death metal further. The line-up is worth knowing: Gene Hoglan joined on drums for the first time, Steve Di Giorgio was on bass for the second and last time, and Andy LaRocque played guitar, his only appearance with the band.
It was well received at the time and has kept its admirers since. Invisible Oranges has called it one of the genre's most forward-thinking pieces. The track to start with is "The Philosopher", which got a video that was played heavily on MTV, a rare thing for a band this extreme. It's a good place to hear Death in the middle of their progression from gore-soaked beginnings towards something more intricate.
