High Octane Cult: The Ultimate Collection 1984-1995
High Octane Cult: The Ultimate Collection 1984-1995 is a greatest hits compilation from The Cult, released on 5 November 1996 for the United States and Japan. It gathers every single the band had put out up to that point, and adds two extra tracks, "Beauty's on the Street" and "In the Clouds". It sits after the band's sixth studio album, The Cult, from 1994, and so covers the whole first stretch of their career, from Dreamtime onwards.
It is a curious entry in the catalogue, because the band had no part in it. Their then label, Beggars Banquet, put it together alone. Ian Astbury later called it "sad" on the band's official website in 2006, and Billy Duffy has also spoken against it, particularly the short bio in the sleeve. Astbury's hand-drawn artwork was lost, so car photos and a Sonic Temple band shot stood in. It is worth hearing mainly for the singles.
