Cold Dark Place

Cold Dark Place is an EP from the American band Mastodon, released on 22 September 2017 through Reprise Records. It came out digitally and on CD, with a limited-edition ten-inch vinyl following on 27 October. Though it landed in the same year as the album Emperor of Sand, most of it dates from earlier. Three of the tracks were recorded during the sessions for 2014's Once More 'Round the Sun, while "Toe to Toes" was recorded during the Emperor of Sand sessions.

What sets it apart is the tone. This is the softest-sounding thing Mastodon had put out up to that point, and it has been described as progressive rock, stoner rock and hard rock rather than purely progressive metal. For anyone who knows the band for their heavier side, it offers a gentler, more melodic angle on them, and it works as a companion piece to the two albums whose sessions it grew out of.
