Medium Rarities
Medium Rarities is a compilation from the American metal band Mastodon, released on 11 September 2020 through Reprise Records. It came out digitally and on limited edition vinyl, and gathers together odds and ends from the band's catalogue: covers, instrumental versions of earlier songs and live recordings.
It sits between Emperor of Sand and Hushed and Grim in the Atlanta band's run of studio albums, and works as a stopgap for dedicated fans. The one fresh piece is the opener, "Fallen Torches", which appeared as a single on 31 July 2020. It features Scott Kelly of Neurosis on guest vocals, his last appearance with Mastodon. For anyone who loves the band's sludge and progressive sides, the collection is a handy way to hear them in less familiar settings.
