Call of the Mastodon

Call of the Mastodon gathers early recordings from the American metal band Mastodon. Relapse Records released it on 7 February 2006, and it works as a look back at where the band began, before the larger-scale records that followed.

It sits between Leviathan, which came out in 2004, and Blood Mountain, which arrived later in 2006. The music falls within heavy metal, progressive metal and sludge metal, the mix that defines the band. For anyone who came to Mastodon through their later albums, it's a handy way to hear the early material gathered in one place and to trace the sound back towards its roots.
