Black Metal
Black Metal is the second studio album by Venom, the English band who came out of the new wave of British heavy metal. It was released on 1 November 1982 through Neat Records, following their debut, Welcome to Hell, from the year before.
The record gave a whole subgenre its name, though the music itself was an early, rough form of extreme metal that still had its roots in traditional heavy metal. It went on to influence the speed metal, thrash metal and death metal scenes, as well as black metal proper. AllMusic said it sowed the seeds of much that would later be called extreme metal, while the book Lords of Chaos credited it with carving some of black metal's essential features in stone. Its lyrics and imagery were a major influence on the early Norwegian black metal scene, which makes it essential listening for anyone tracing where extreme metal came from.
