Back and Forth is Skinny Puppy's self-published debut, released in 1984. Though the material calls it an album in places, it is in fact an EP, and a tiny one in terms of circulation: the plan was a limited run of 50 copies, but only 35 were made. The first 15 were dubbed at normal speed, while the other 20 were dubbed fast, leaving them slightly inferior.

It sits at the very start of a discography that runs through Remission, released the same year, and on to Weapon in 2013. The sleeve is part of the appeal: alien illustrations from Robert Emenegger's book UFOs Past, Present, and Future appear on the front and back, while the inner sleeve carries a detail from George Tooker's 1950 painting Subway. In 1992 it was remastered and reissued with extra tracks as Back and Forth Series Two, which is the easier way in for most listeners.
