Twisted Sister
Twisted Sister formed in 1972 in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, and later settled on Long Island, New York. They grew out of a band called Silver Star and went through plenty of line-up changes before landing on the classic five in 1982: Dee Snider, Jay Jay French, Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda, Mark "The Animal" Mendoza and A. J. Pero. Their sound sits between heavy metal, hard rock and glam, delivered in big hair, makeup and androgynous stage clothes.
Under the Blade (1982) and You Can't Stop Rock 'n' Roll (1983) won them good reviews and an underground following. Stay Hungry (1984) took them into the mainstream, thanks to "We're Not Gonna Take It", their only Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, and "I Wanna Rock". Both came with slapstick videos. Come Out and Play (1985) is the other record fans return to. They split in 1988, reunited in 2003, and finished a farewell tour in 2016 after Pero's death.
