Whitesnake formed in London in 1978 as the backing band for David Coverdale, who had just left Deep Purple. They soon became a group in their own right, though Coverdale remained the only constant member throughout. Their early records, including Trouble and Lovehunter, leaned on blues rock, and Ready an' Willing, Come an' Get It and Saints & Sinners all reached the UK top ten.

Mid-decade, Coverdale turned his attention to America. Slide It In (1984) won them heavy MTV airplay, and the 1987 album Whitesnake (titled 1987 in the UK) sold over eight million copies in the US, bringing "Here I Go Again", "Is This Love" and "Still of the Night". The sound had by then shifted towards a glossier hard rock. Slip of the Tongue followed in 1989, and the band returned from 2003 until a farewell tour in 2022.
