Rancid's self-titled debut album arrived on 10 May 1993 and opened the band's run of full-length records. It is the only one made by the group as a trio. Lars Frederiksen didn't join until the supporting tour, so the line-up here is a short-lived snapshot of the band. Brett Gurewitz didn't produce it, though he did sing backing vocals, and the album was one of only three in the catalogue without him behind the desk.

The record is also the second of three self-titled Rancid releases, after the 1992 debut EP and before the fifth album in 2000, which is why some fans call it "Rancid Rancid". It's the only album before 2017's Trouble Maker to go without the band's familiar logo on the cover. Brooklyn Vegan placed it sixth in a 2019 ranking of their albums, which makes it a good place to start for anyone tracing how this punk rock band began.
