Cobras and Fire: The Mastermind Redux
Cobras and Fire: The Mastermind Redux came out in October 2015 on Napalm Records. It is Monster Magnet's reworking of their 2010 album Mastermind, and the second time the American band had gone back to a recent studio record and rebuilt it, after Milking the Stars did the same for Last Patrol in 2014.
Dave Wyndorf wanted these songs to sound stranger and grubbier, and to lean less on classic rock. He pointed instead towards garage-psych, fuzz punk and film soundtrack atmospherics. Nearly everything was re-recorded, with organ, piano, sitars and other additions giving the songs a new character. If you know Mastermind, this is a chance to hear its tunes in a darker, more off-kilter light. It sits between Last Patrol's reimagining and 2018's Mindfucker in the band's catalogue.
