Tooth and Nail
Tooth and Nail is the second studio album by Dokken, released in September 1984 on Elektra. It followed Breaking the Chains, whose unsuccessful US release left the label wary of backing another record. The band's management had to fight to win them a second chance, and that struggle gave the album its title. It was also the first Dokken record with bassist Jeff Pilson, who arrived after Juan Croucier left to join Ratt.
The sessions were tense. Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch could not work in the studio together, and Tom Werman quit as producer after a few weeks. Roy Thomas Baker and Michael Wagener finished the job and mixed it. The music runs from fast, aggressive numbers to melodic pop-leaning ballads, and "Alone Again" and its video helped the album reach Gold, peaking at No. 49 on the Billboard 200. Platinum status followed in 1989.
