Type O Negative were a gothic metal band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1989 by vocalist and bassist Peter Steele, guitarist Kenny Hickey, keyboardist Josh Silver and drummer Sal Abruscato, who was later replaced by Johnny Kelly. Their songs dwelt on addiction, death, depression, religion, romance and sex, which earned them the nickname "the Drab Four", a nod to the Beatles' "Fab Four".

Across seven studio albums, from Slow, Deep and Hard in 1991 to Dead Again in 2007, they built a devoted cult following. Bloody Kisses went platinum in 1993 and October Rust went gold in 1996, and both remain the best places to start, alongside Life Is Killing Me and World Coming Down. Steele died in April 2010, and the surviving members announced their split that November.
