Hesher was Nickelback's first release, an EP recorded in Vancouver and put out on 10 March 1996. Every song was written and played by the band, and these were the first tracks Chad Kroeger wrote for them. Brandon Kroeger, cousin to Chad and bassist Mike, was on drums, a role he kept for just one more record, the debut album Curb.

Only a little over a thousand copies were sold before the band stopped making it, so it is now a sought-after collector's item. Vancouver station CFOX-FM played "Fly" once a day, which drew professional interest to the band. Four of the seven tracks resurfaced on Curb: "Where?" and "Left" were re-recorded, while "Fly" and "Windowshopper" were extensively remixed and remastered. Kroeger has called the EP "terrible", though he once allowed that "Fly" is "pretty good".
