The State is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Nickelback, released on 1 September 1998. It follows their 1996 debut, Curb, and sits in the post-grunge mould that would define their early sound. "Leader of Men" opened the campaign as lead single, with "Old Enough", "Breathe" and "Worthy to Say" following.
It was a slow burner rather than an instant hit. The album peaked at No. 130 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 3 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart in 2000. It became the band's first record to go Gold in both Canada and the United States, later reaching Platinum in Canada in April 2002 and in the US in 2008. For anyone tracing how Nickelback got from their early days to Silver Side Up in 2001, this is the missing link.
