Album
Dream Evil
Dream Evil is the fourth studio album by Dio, released on 3 August 1987 on Vertigo. It follows Holy Diver, The Last in Line and Sacred Heart, and it arrived after guitarist Vivian Campbell left the band in 1986. His replacement was Craig Goldy, who came in alongside keyboardist Claude Schnell, both formerly of Rough Cutt. The record spawned the singles "All the Fools Sailed Away" and "I Could Have Been a Dreamer".
It is also a record of endings. Dream Evil was the last Dio album to carry the mascot Murray on its cover, and it was Schnell's final appearance with the band. Drummer Vinny Appice would not return until Strange Highways in 1993, and bassist Jimmy Bain stayed away until Magica in 2000. For anyone tracing the band's classic traditional heavy metal years, it marks the close of that first line-up era.
