Danzig's self-titled debut arrived on 30 August 1988 and opened a run of studio albums that has carried on for more than three decades, through Lucifuge in 1990 and right up to Sings Elvis in 2020. It was also the first release on Rick Rubin's new label, Def American Recordings, with Rubin producing. The band was American and the sound heavy metal, and this is where it all began.

It has stayed the group's best-selling record, going gold in the US in 1994 and later platinum. A successful world tour followed in 1988 and 1989, and the album was reissued in the US and UK in 1998 by American Recordings, the successor to Def American. For anyone tracing the band's story, this is the starting point, and the one that most listeners have taken home.
