Malleus Maleficarum is the debut studio album by Pestilence, the Dutch death metal band, released on 26 September 1988. Though it is technically a death metal record, it leans towards thrash, with punk influences in the mix, giving it a crossover thrash feel that sets it apart from much of what the band went on to make.
It is also the only Pestilence album to feature guitarist Randy Meinhard. Patrick Uterwijk replaced him before the follow-up, Consuming Impulse, arrived in 1989. That makes this first record something of a one-off in the band's catalogue, and a good place to hear the group before their sound shifted. If you only know Pestilence for their later records, it is worth hearing where they began.
