Remains
Remains is the sixth studio album by Canadian band Annihilator, released in July 1997 through Music For Nations and CMC International. It arrived after the previous line-up had dissolved, so Jeff Waters played every instrument himself, with a drum machine behind him. John Bates joins on guitars on "No Love", and Dave Steele sings on that track and on "Wind".
What sets it apart is the sound. Waters steers the band towards a more industrial style, a clear change of texture from the records around it in the catalogue. It also marks the end of an era of sorts: Waters took the lead vocals here, and he would not do so again on an Annihilator album until Suicide Society, eighteen years later. For anyone tracing the band's course from Refresh the Demon to Criteria for a Black Widow, it is the odd one out, and well worth hearing for that.
