Songs of Surrender
Songs of Surrender finds U2 revisiting their own catalogue: 40 songs re-recorded and reinterpreted, many of them in stripped-down or acoustic arrangements. Released on 17 March 2023 on Island and Interscope, it was produced by the Edge and shaped largely by him and Bono. Work began in 2021 and ran for two years through the pandemic lockdowns, at the Edge's home, in France, and in studios in London and Los Angeles. Collaborators included Bob Ezrin, Duncan Stewart, Declan Gaffney and Stjepan Hauser.
The record accompanies Bono's memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, whose 40 chapters each take their name from a U2 song. Rearranged versions first appeared in the audiobook and in Bono's live shows for the book tour. It came in 16-, 20- and 40-track editions, and critics were divided. It still topped the UK chart, U2's 11th number one there and their first since 2009, and a Disney+ documentary with Dave Letterman marked the release.
