No Doubt
No Doubt's self-titled debut came out on 17 March 1992. It was first recorded as an independent release, then redone in Los Angeles with producer Dito Godwin after the band signed to Interscope. Its upbeat, ska-flavoured rock sat awkwardly in an era dominated by grunge's heavier mood.
Reaction to the band's live shows was strong, but the record sold around 30,000 copies and reviews were mixed. Interscope declined to fund a single, so the band put out "Trapped in a Box" themselves. It's a modest start, but it's where the story begins: The Beacon Street Collection followed in 1995 and sold 100,000 copies, and Interscope then backed Tragic Kingdom later that year. Hear it as the sound of a band finding its footing before the breakthrough.
