Swagger
Swagger is the third album by Scottish rock band Gun, released in 1994 on A&M Records. It follows Taking On the World and Gallus, and it is the record where the band's melodic hard rock found its widest audience.
The big talking point is their take on "Word Up!", originally recorded by American funk group Cameo. Gun gave it a guitar-driven makeover, took it to number 8 in the UK and won Best Cover at the first international MTV Europe Music Awards. It wasn't the only hit: "Don't Say It's Over" reached 19, "The Only One" 29 and "Something Worthwhile" 39, giving the album four UK Top 40 singles between July 1994 and April 1995. Reviews, including those from Allmusic and Rock Hard, were mixed to positive. It's well worth hearing for the cover alone, but the singles around it show a band at its most commercially confident.
