Out of the Night is where Great White's recorded story begins: an EP put out independently in 1983 on the Aegean label. It found an audience quickly, selling more than 8,000 copies in under three months while the band were out on the US tour supporting Dokken.

That early momentum mattered. It helped bring EMI to the band, who went on to sign them and release their first full-length, the self-titled album. Three of the EP's songs, "Out of the Night", "On Your Knees" and "Dead End", were re-recorded for that debut, so it is a chance to hear them in their first form. In 1987, with Once Bitten lifting the band's profile, Enigma Records reissued the EP as On Your Knees, and its songs later turned up on the US CD release of the live album Recovery: Live!
