Album
Subterranean Jungle
Subterranean Jungle is the seventh studio album by the Ramones, released on 28 February 1983 by Sire Records. It follows End of the Century and Pleasant Dreams, the two most pop-minded records of their career, and steers the band back towards harder punk rock, a move Johnny Ramone pushed for. Touches of hard rock and psychedelia creep in, and three cover songs appear, two of them opening the record.
The sessions were tense, with Joey and Marky struggling with alcohol and Dee Dee with drugs. Even so, critics largely heard a return to the band's roots and reviewed it kindly. It reached number 83 on the Billboard 200. It is also the first Ramones album with a lead vocal from someone other than Joey: Dee Dee sings "Time Bomb" and the bridge of "Outsider". Marky left after this one, returning for Brain Drain in 1989.
