Jeff Buckley
Jeff Buckley was an American singer, guitarist and songwriter, born in 1966 and raised as Scott Moorhead. He spent a decade as a session guitarist in Los Anges before building a following in the early 1990s with performances at small venues in Manhattan's East Village. That reputation led to a deal with Columbia, and his sound drew on alternative rock, folk rock and the singer-songwriter tradition.
Grace, released in 1994, is the only studio album he finished. He toured it across the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia. In 1996 he began work in New York on a follow-up with Tom Verlaine producing, then resumed in Memphis in 1997, where he drowned in the Wolf River that May. His standing has grown since. Thom Yorke and Matt Bellamy have cited him as an influence, and his version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" was added to the US National Recording Registry in 2014.
